Flat lay inspo and design is what it sounds like — a couples’ wedding day details, laying flat on the ground to be photographed in a special way. Styling these details is easily one of my favorite parts of a wedding day. Having time to just be creative and make them all come to life.
A while back, a few photographers and I put our flat lay design creativity to work at The Emerson Venue, and the inspiration was everywhere. We drew from open window lighting, florals, chocolates, and bathroom countertops. Shadows, chairs, tables, and carpets. It was such a fun exercise wandering around the Emerson, finding spots where we could take our time and capture gorgeous images of invitation suites.

Tips for couples:
Not sure what to have included in your detail shots? Everyone knows the standard items, like your rings (including your engagement ring!), shoes, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, or your bouquet. But did you know you can also include things like your class rings, pictures of loved ones attached to your bouquet, floral crowns, and other items of significance?
Well you can! You can include anything you want in your details on your wedding day. Compiling your items can go from something that was done last minute the night before, to something extra thoughtful and personal.
Things to consider when compiling items for your photographer:
- Are there items that represent me and my getting ready moments?
- What is something I might not have on me, but I want remembered?
- What moment am I most looking forward to at my wedding? Is there an item from that moment I can include in my details?
Helpful items might include:
a handwritten letter
your custom invitation and envelope suite
spare florals from florist
a jar of elegant perfume
meaningful, small photos
kept lace sections of your dress
