It’s hard to know what questions to ask when hiring a photographer that you’re interviewing for your wedding. Or for any session, really! A lot of times couples feel bad when they aren’t sure what to ask. I always reassure them it is absolutely okay to not know what to ask me. This is new territory for a lot of you! The questions can come later, and until then I’m happy to talk about my process or other practical details. Questions usually start to come, but I realize that it’s so easy to feel overwhelmed with a lot of information. Couples are busy booking many things AND planning their big day, and not knowing what to ask when hiring a photographer is a common occurrence.
My main goal in client consultations (which are complimentary and what I do for every couple before they book me!) is to answer your questions, but also to make the time as beneficial as possible for you. To help aide in that, I’ve outlined some questions below for you to consider beforehand, or to have on hand during our call!
How many hours do you want to book my services for?
This is usually a tough one to figure out early on in the planning process, so I reassure couples to not worry if this changes in the future! Just as of right now, what do you think you’re considering as far as coverage? 6 hours? 8 hours? 10 hours? All day? A good starting point I usually tell clients is how I begin my coverage two hours before ceremony start time. That usually helps them in figuring out how long to book me for.
Do you want to have a first look? If not, what about a first touch/prayer/letter exchange?
If you know me, I love first looks. And not just because of how tender they are, but how you two get a little break before the ceremony to just be together. Sometimes couples will opt to do this, AND have family photos right after so that they don’t have to worry about it after the ceremony.
There are so many ways to have some breathing time before the ceremony where if you aren’t sure about a first look with each other. You can have a letter exchange with you facing back-to-back, a first touch around a door corner, or a first prayer around the wall of a building. These moments allow for some time together (which helps with nerves!), without seeing each other.
Do you want to add on an engagement session or an editorial bridal session to your package?
I always highly recommend these sessions to inquiring couples, because it gives us time to work together before the wedding! You see how comfortable of an environment I provide for you both, and it gets rid of any ‘photography nerves’ you might have (we all have those!). Plus they are great to have either framed at your wedding, in your home, or made into Save the Dates.
What are the deliverables? What comes with your packages?
In case you didn’t know, every package I make for every couple is completely customizable! But with every one of those customizable packages, clients get a hi-res online photo gallery, and a print release. Other additional add-ons and sessions I offer are luxury lay-flat photo albums, 5×7 matte or satin prints, glass USB of your wedding images, rehearsal dinner coverage, mini sessions, extra hours, metal-framed canvas prints, couples sessions, and a second shooter.
How many photos can we expect?
This varies per gallery for me because it depends on how long of coverage time I am booked for, if there are any pauses during the day, the course of the day, etc. But typically for an engagement or editorial bridal session, anywhere between 150-250 photos. For a wedding, it depends on how many hours and if you are adding on a second shooter to your package. You can expect at least 60-80 photos per hour of coverage (but it’s often way more).
Do you recommend any other vendors?
Yes! I have some lovely individuals I’ve worked with or know are talented vendors in the wedding industry, and I’m happy to recommend them all to you. Planners, florists, DJs, videographers, etc.
If after our consultation call we feel I am not able to fulfill your expectations, I will recommend one or 2 other photographers with a similar style that I think could help you out and make your wedding vision come to life.
These are just some of the beneficial questions that can be asked during our consultation. I’m here to try and answer everything as best I can at any point in the process. I’m always here from start to finish for you, and have a 100% support system from inquiry to gallery delivery. Any questions that might come up later we just answer whenever you have them!
